David McGinty, the 57-year-old Slippery Rock man who ran from his vehicle with an apparent head injury after an Oct. 30 crash on Route 8, turned himself in to state police Monday, and has been charged with felony receiving stolen property.

State police spokesman Dan Keston said McGinty and his attorney appeared at the Troop D barracks Monday. Police then took custody of McGinty and charged him with one county of felony receiving stolen property in connection with a Summit Township theft.

Keston explained that a few days before the vehicle crash, troopers were called to B&R Camper Sales on Route 422 in Summit Township regarding a stolen travel trailer.

Troopers responded and investigated the theft, and a few days later, McGinty was involved in the crash on Route 8 in Slippery Rock Township. While investigating his disappearance, Keston said, troopers noticed a camper on McGinty's property when they interviewed his family.

“A quick-thinking trooper thought 'That looks like the one that was stolen,'” Keston said.

The troopers discovered upon further investigation that it was the stolen trailer, and an arrest warrant was issued for McGinty.

Keston said he had no immediate information on a possible head injury McGinty was reported to have suffered in the Oct. 30 crash, and declined to say where troopers believe he was hiding for the six days he was missing, citing the ongoing investigation. He also could not say whether McGinty's family knew where he was while he was considered missing.

McGinty appeared before District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Monday morning, before being remanded to the county prison on $50,000 bail. He was initially unable to post bail, but was released on bail at around noon Tuesday.

McGinty is facing a preliminary hearing before Stoughton on Nov. 14.
