ZELIENOPLE — At their Monday meeting, council members updated the public on the revitalization initiatives in downtown Zelienople.

Things are going well, though work is not expected to be finished this year.

Kaufman HouseContractors have been bidding on the Kaufman House construction job for three weeks and the borough is planning on reviewing them in September.Pat Boylan, who is in charge of renovating the interior and who will own the property, is already at work clearing the interior in preparation for renovations.“The basement will be cleared out this week,” said Don Pepe, borough manager. “We think (Boylan) will start the interior soon.”The borough hopes to have work on the exterior run simultaneously with interior renovations. As of now, there is no clear end date for the project.

Main StreetThe Streetscape project has been moving along steadily with numerous council members testifying to happy shop owners commenting on the surprising lack of disruption in their day to day operations.Recently, a contractor has been working nights on Main Street to comply with traffic regulations regarding lane limitations.Phase one of the Streetscape Project will end once the work reaches Spring Street, though that is unlikely to happen before next year as PennDOT restrictions may force the contractor to hold off on any work during the winter. This moratorium may go into effect as soon as October and end as late as March.The contractor will likely not reach Spring Street until next spring.The council took it’s first step in beginning phase two of the Streetscape Project in a vote authorizing the borough to seek qualified companies to take on the second phase of the project so they are ready to go when the time comes to begin the next phase of revitalization.
