SLIPPERY ROCK — A Pittsburgh man is facing assault and retail theft charges after allegedly stealing 15 items from the borough’s Giant Eagle store and subsequently causing injuries to a man who tried to stop him from getting away.

According to court documents filed by the borough police department, Fred L. Ramsey Jr., 22, allegedly stole about $97 in assorted groceries from the store on Aug. 25, and was confronted by a store employee after walking to his vehicle.

Ramsey and the employee had walked back into the store, police said, when Ramsey bolted out of a conference room and tried to run outside.

The employee, identified in court documents as William D. Richards, tried to block Ramsey from exiting the store and was bowled over by the man in what police called a “shoulder block” motion.

Police said Ramsey then got into his vehicle and drove away, hitting a parked pickup truck along the way.

Richards, meanwhile, suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, according to court documents and was ultimately taken to Grove City Medical Center along with a woman identified in court documents as Vicky Morris, who was in the pickup truck struck by Ramsey’s vehicle and complained of neck and stomach pain after the crash.

Police said they used surveillance footage from the store to identify Ramsey.

Police said Ramsey admitted to the retail theft in a written statement and was subsequently charged with one county of felony aggravated assault, one misdemeanor count of simple assault, one misdemeanor count of retail theft, and one misdemeanor count of accidents involving damage to attended vehicles or property.

Richards, according to court documents, was ultimately taken from GCMC to UPMC Mercy Hospital.
