There were hot dogs, games and water balloons Sunday in Butler's Rotary Park.

About 250 people attended the Kids Fun Day hosted by Action in Recovery, a group of people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction who do community service projects in the city, according to the organization's founder Jason Beckwith. “The (kids) are having a good time,” Beckwith said. “We're trying to give them ideas of healthier activities.”

The children gathered at various stations, including booth games, cornhole and basketball, among others.

Each person attending the event received a free hot dog. A number of people in yellow volunteer shirts helped keep the children having fun.

“There's 50 volunteers from Action in Recovery, and it's not just people in recovery,” Beckwith said.

One of the volunteers was Beckwith's son, Ethan.

“Getting them out here and getting them active, I believe that this is good for the community,” Ethan said.

Beckwith said the number of volunteers and attendees helps prove that they are on the right path.

“We're collectively coming together to attack the key issue affecting society,” he said, “and having some fun while we do it.”

Beckwith said the group is working on plans to bring people together again with a vigil involving Chinese lanterns at Kelly Automotive Park. The event's date will be announced later.

“(It's about) putting unity back into the community,” he said. “We need to stop thinking about you and me; it's now us and we.”
