Butler City Council voted at Thursday’s council meeting to welcome economic development liquor licenses in the city.

The licenses would be given by the state to individual bar and restaurant owners for $50,000.

“We don’t want to oppose the opportunity for business,” said mayor Tom Donaldson. “We’re trying to continue to grow downtown as a destination.”

The licenses would not be transferable to another establishment, nor movable if a business were to decide to relocate. The city is eligible for two such licenses per year.

These licenses may be issued by the state without regard to a county’s quota restrictions. They are solely for the purpose of economic development.
