A Chicora man charged after an all-terrain vehicle police chase was sentenced to fines in Butler County Court on Thursday.

William J. Simmons III, 19, was sentenced to $200 in fines by Judge William Shaffer Tuesday, after previously having been found guilty of summary driving an ATV on a street and unsafe driving on an ATV during a non-jury trial.

Simmons was also charged with misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude police, but that charge had previously been withdrawn by the prosecution.

He was charged after an incident on Aug. 21, 2016, on Route 268. A state trooper on routine patrol saw two ATVs heading in the opposite direction that were not equipped to be on the road.

He turned around and attempted to initiate a traffic stop at the intersection with Fairmont Road, but the vehicles continued along Route 268 for five to seven miles through Chicora before pulling onto a gated dirt road and into the woods, ending the chase.

Simmons was identified as one possible driver, and when police went to interview him, officers saw an ATV matching the description as well as the helmet worn by the driver.

A juvenile was also charged as the second driver, police said.
