MARS — The profit from the sale of the old Mars Fire Department station will go toward outfitting the new Adams Area Fire District with furniture and equipment.

Jason Safreed, the president of the fire district, said the familiar buildings on Irvine Street with huge “EMS” on the garage doors were recently sold for $414,500.

He said the total square footage of the two buildings is 7,000 to 8,000

He said the buyer, Rudolph Investments, said one of the two buildings on the property will become a brewery. Rudolph Investments could not be found for comment.

The asking price for the property was $427,000 and the fire district had other offers, Safreed said, but Rudolph Investments agreed to contingencies like allowing the fire district to remain in the district for 60 days after the closing.

He said the Mars Fire Department was formed in 1934 and the first part of the Irvine Street property was purchased shortly after that. He did not know the exact age of the Irvine Street buildings, but has old photos showing the property and fire trucks.

“The second part of the property was bought in the late 1980s or early 1990s,” Safreed said.

The money from the sale will go toward buying furniture, computers and other items for the new Adams Area Fire District building on Route 228 in Adams Township.

“The township owns the buildings, but the fire district has to outfit the inside of it,” Safreed said of the new building.

He said the fire district's equipment and personnel are completely out of the old Mars fire station and all set up in the modern new facility.

Safreed said the firefighters are relieved to be in their new building, as the old facility has been insufficient for many years.

He said the size of the Mars bays had to be considered each time a new truck was ordered to ensure it would fit.

“Instead of buying a truck to fit the building, we now can buy what we need,” Safreed said. “It's one less thing we have to worry about.”

Mars and Valencia Volunteer Fire departments merged in 2007 to form the Adams Area Fire District.
