The Butler County Prison is getting new pipes soon.

The county commissioners Wednesday opted to pay Hot Water Distributors in Pittsburgh $30,800 for roughly 250 feet of flue pipe.

The sections of pipe will replace deteriorated piping in the boiler room in the South Washington Street building.

County workers will do the work, which includes knocking down a wall to reach all the pipe.

John Campbell, director of county facilities and operations, said in an interview work should begin this fall.

The county originally set a threshold of $19,400 to spend on the new pipe.

Campbell said that limit was increased to ensure a better quality pipe made of stainless steel is used.

He explained a lower quality metal did not last long. The prison, which replaced a building dating back to the 1950s, opened in 2009.

Petrolia project

The commissioners awarded a $103,138 contract to Iron City Plumbing and Excavating of Freedom in Beaver County for the repair of a storm sewer in Petrolia.

Most of the work will be done under Pigeon and Forest streets.

The project is fully funded by federal money funneled through the Community Development Block Grant program.

The next lowest bid was $105,125. The highest of nine bids was $246,754.

The project was rebid after the original bids were rejected in July due to insufficient funding.

The lowest responsible bid then was $120,499, but the grant funding only totaled $86,065.

Wendy Leslie, county Community Development Block Grant coordinator, explained in an interview more CDBG money became available since then.
