Deb Collins, co-owner of Sports and Spirits bar and restaurant in Evans City, will once again serve specialty beers and traditional German food during Oktoberfest.

EVANS CITY — Deb Collins will once again debut special fall beers this week in honor of the town’s Oktoberfest celebration.

Collins, who owns Sports and Spirits on Main Street with her husband, Ray, said her favorite is the Jacko Traveler Pumpkin Shandy.

“It’s really smooth and it has a really nice pumpkin flavor to it,” she said.

Other selections are Leinenkugel Octoberfest, Elysian Owl and four other seasonal beers.

Collins visits the Evans City Beer Distributor each year in the late summer to make her selections for Oktoberfest.

Some, like the Leinenkugel and Jacko Traveler, she is familiar with and orders each year. Others are new selections Collins tries out to see if her customers approve.

“People started asking for (the specialty fall beers) a couple of weeks ago,” Collins said. “I guess they’re ready for fall.”

Those who prefer beer served in the traditional German manner — warm — can be accommodated during Oktoberfest.

“We have both warm and cold beer,” she said.

Collins said Sports and Spirits is always very busy during the annual Evans City Oktoberfest, both during festival hours and after.

Regarding food, Collins said this year Sports and Spirits will offer a special Oktoberfest menu. Her popular homemade German potato salad will definitely make the menu, she said.

“My mother helps me make it for Oktoberfest because we have to make so much of it,” Collins said. “We make about 40 pounds.”

Knockwurst, bratwurst, a special foie gras bratwurst and kielbasa Reuben sandwiches also will be on the special menu.

But those who do not consider German food their favorite can rest easy. Sports and Spirits also will offer burgers, shrimp and fish during Oktoberfest.

She said the special Oktoberfest menu allows her to simplify things for herself and her staff, who are always extremely busy during the festival.

“It gets so crazy in here that I just can’t pull it off,” Collins said of offering the regular menu plus the Oktoberfest selections.

She has discontinued her traditional Limburger cheese sandwich as well.
