Rodney A. Weiland
Rodney A. Weiland, 84, formerly of Pleasant Hills, Pa., passed away July 15 at his daughter's home in San Antonio, Texas, with his family by his side.
Born Dec. 28, 1931, in Butler, he was a son of the late Aloysius and Olive (Osche) Weiland.
He was a Butler High School graduate. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
He was retired from the U.S. Steel Corp. as division superintendent of maintenance and utilities. He joined U.S. Steel in 1960 as a general foreman for the Gary, Ind., Works and progressed through positions as superintendent of chemical and field maintenance and superintendent of utilities at the three production plants making up the Mon Valley Works. Prior positions include Duquesne Light and Armco Butler Works.
He served as a board official on the Pleasant Hills Sewer Authority and for the Steel Valley Vo-Tech School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Okinawa, Japan.
He was a member for more than 50 years of St. Thomas A' Becket Roman Catholic Church in Jefferson Hills, Pa.
Surviving are his son, Curt A. Weiland and his wife, Dr. Kathryn Ryan, of Butler; her daughter, Lynne W. Connolly and her husband, Chris, of San Antonio, Texas; and six grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew and Claire Weiland. Cara, Kathryn and Kristen Connolly. He is also survived by his sister, Darla Weiland Holloway of Cincinnati, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gayle (Robb) Weiland, who died March 31, 2008.
