EVANS CITY — A pair of satellite television company installers charged in the theft of jewelry from an Adams Township home where they were working, waived their preliminary hearings Tuesday.

One defendant is headed for trial. The other is awaiting a court ruling for a diversionary program that could expunge all charges from her record.

Michael D. Crotti, 29, and his girlfriend, Heidi D. Swank, 29, both of Connellsville, Fayette County, are each charged with theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy, all felonies.

Swank also is charged with tampering with physical evidence, a misdemeanor.

Adams Township police said the couple was on the job at a house at Southern Valley Court on July 26 when the homeowner discovered a ring missing.

The victim told police that the ring — gold and silver with a sapphire — was “special” and that she had been saving it to eventually give to her daughter.

The homeowner notified police after confronting the suspects, who denied taking the ring.

Police, however, took Crotti into custody after learning that he was wanted on an arrest warrant out of West Virginia.

That warrant for grand larceny was issued July 20 on charges that he stole jewelry from homes while he was there installing satellite television, according to the Harrison County (W.Va.) Sheriff’s Office.

Crotti was placed in the Butler County Prison for the out-of-state warrant. Swank was released.

The next week, court documents said, police got a call from the homeowner, who reported receiving several text messages from Swank. Those texts referenced rings stolen from the victim’s house.

Police said Swank told the victim that she had spoken to Crotti and that he wanted to talk to the homeowner to get the matter resolved to avoid possible criminal charges.

Investigators, in turn, listened to the recorded prison phone calls that Crotti made to his girlfriend.

“Heidi Swank said that she had the rings and was going to bury them in the back yard until Crotti got out of jail,” according to a police affidavit.

The Fayette County District Attorney’s Office, who joined in the investigation, on Aug. 9 obtained a search warrant for the defendants’ home.

Connellsville police joined Adams Township in serving the warrant. Swank was at the house. When informed of the evidence gathered in the investigation, she advised the officers that the stolen rings were at her sister’s house.

Swank’s sister was called and returned two rings, one of which was the “special” one coveted by the victim.

When police questioned Swank that day, documents said, she claimed she did not know that Crotti had stolen them until his phone call from prison.

“She said that he told her where the rings were and she found them in ‘their spot,’” according to the affidavit.

The “spot,” police learned, was the headliner of the couple’s van, where Swank admitted they conceal drugs.

Swank’s attorney, Donald Moreman of Greensburg, on Wednesday said his client waived her preliminary hearing after he and prosecutors reached an agreement that could resolve her case.

The agreement would allow Swank to enter into an accelerated rehabilitated disposition program, without admitting guilt to any of the four charges, in exchange for her testimony against Crotti at trial.
