BUTLER TWP — Officials from Butler and Center Township will have at least one voice opposed to a possible regional police force when the municipalities meet with Butler Township next week to discuss that topic.

Butler Township Commissioner Sam Zurzolo said Monday that he opposes the idea, and believes that the township’s police force is functioning well on its own.

“I am totally opposed at this point of putting my police in a regional department,” Zurzolo said. “I don’t think we’re ready at this time to join any police force.”

Board President Dave Zarnick didn’t voice his own opinion Monday, but said that the township would maintain its policy of discussing cooperative agreements with any municipality that requests a meeting.

“We will meet with any township that wants to meet on items of concern and try to work with them,” Zarnick said.
