HARRISBURG — The 12-year transportation plan announced Thursday by the State Transportation Commission includes projects in Butler County.

Nine of these are expected to be completed in the county over the next 12 years, either in the first period (2017-20), the second period (2021-24) or the third period (2025-28) of the plan.

Here are some of the major projects: congestion reduction to the Cranberry Intersection, third period, $31.3 million; Balls Bend Highway reconstruction on Route 228, second period, $24.8 million; Mars Railroad Bridge West expansion, third period, $26.4 million; Three Degree Road Intersection highway restoration, first period, $19.8 million; Karns Crossing Bridge restoration in East Butler, second period, $10.8 million; and Route 528 over Lake Arthur Bridge restoration, third period, $25.2 million.

The state update plans for $61.9 billion being available statewide in the next 12 years for improvements to roads, bridges, transit systems, railroads and airports.

A total of $354 million is planned for Butler County.

PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said in a news release. “This update reflects the progress we are making, chipping away at our large backlog of pavement and bridge needs while adding some capacity expansion to address long-standing desire for better mobility.”
