EAST BRADY — The Armstrong Rails to Trails Association has received two grants from the Volunteer Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation for trail work in East Brady.

One grant for $7,500 will provide surfacing material for a 600-foot section of trail behind the East Brady Treatment Plant. The improvements will connect the Shady Lane share-the-road section of the trail with an asphalt section that ends at Purdum Street, and make the section of trail more ridable.

Work preparing that section of trail for the resurfacing was done in July, said Toni Henry, the director of the East Brady Area Development Corp., which released the grant information.

The other grant for $1,200 is providing funds to buy a stencil and paint to apply “share the road” arrows to state and local roads, and to install bike route signs from the trail entrance at Purdum Street through town to the Fish and Boat Commission launch in Bradys Bend. The signs will alert drivers that they may encounter bicyclists on the roads and direct trail users to town.

The project, which volunteers will complete this fall, is a joint effort among the association, East Brady Borough, Bradys Bend Township, and the development corporation’s Trail Town Initiative.

In a press release announcing the grants, Henry called the projects a vital part of efforts to make the trails more accessible and appealing to users.

“Both projects will enhance the trail users’ ability to link the trail to town, link parking to town and to the trail, and increase use of the trail by residents and visitors for biking, walking and jogging,” Henry said.

In a related project, the initiative is conducting a fundraising campaign to have two murals installed in East Brady’s downtown area, Henry said, and is also researching projects for business signs and a boat launch.
