JACKSON TWP — More than 220 people Sunday came to Seneca Valley High School to show their support for childhood brain tumor survivors and their families.

The 2016 Western Pennsylvania Ride for Kids raised $32,360 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

“It was very successful,” task force leader Laura Ebbert said. “We had over one-third of the participants as new riders.”

Participants enjoyed more than an hour of scenic riding on 128 motorcycles past Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park, Harmony borough and the George Washington Trail before returning to the school.

They were escorted by 22 members of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, who raised $5,100 for the event.

“They were tremendous,” Ebbert said. “They were a critical component of putting on the ride.”

Participants cheered for stars Annabelle, Julie, Kirsten, Lindy and Ryan. Last names of the children were not given out. They have or have had brain tumors.

Julie said, “I love this ride because it helps build awareness and gives kids an opportunity to raise money to find a cure.”

Ashley Warren, wife of Pittsburgh Steeler Greg Warren and a brain tumor survivor, talked to the participants.

“Adults getting cancer is terrible, but kids getting it is a different playing field. I would rather have five more brain tumors over again then see my son have to go through this,” Warren said.

“Thank you for being here and making an impact on this disease.”

This is the 16th year for the ride, and the second at Seneca Valley.

Community officials also showed their support.

Harmony borough council President Greg Such said, “The research is extremely valuable. It’s a good group of people.”

Township Supervisor Trent Geis said, “It was wonderful. I learned a lot. It’s a great cause. It’s the first time I have ever been at an event like this and it was well-run.”

Ebbert said the goal for the foundation this year is to raise $2.7 million nationwide in the 40 events planned. The foundation has raised about $1.5 million so far.
