A suspected Butler church burglar faces new charges stemming from his arrest last week,

City police said they found Tyler D. Smith, 31, of Butler with suspected heroin and other contraband on Aug. 1 when they nabbed him on a felony arrest warrant.

The warrant was issued July 25 after police charged Smith with breaking into the Covenant Presbyterian Church on East Jefferson Street sometime overnight May 5 or 6.

Investigators suspect Smith broke a side window to get into the building. According to court documents, he then stole the pastor’s personal checkbook.

He subsequently forged one of the checks for $1,500, police charge.

Authorities noted that Smith was familiar with the church because he previously had been an occasional handyman there.

He is charged with burglary, forgery and theft.

Police began looking for Smith after he was identified as the suspect in the break-in. The search continued after they got the arrest warrant.

A tip from someone who recognized Smith and knew he was wanted led officers to him about 8:50 p.m. at Broad and North streets. He was walking his dog when police arrested him.

A search of his pockets turned up two stamp bags of suspected heroin, a crack pipe and syringe. In his wallet, police found two empty bags of suspected heroin.

Smith on Monday was arraigned on charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Preliminary hearings in both cases have not been set.
