Trio buys site to open new craft brewery
CENTER TWP — A new brewery is on its way after Recon Brewing on Thursday bought a building on Route 8.
Recon Brewing is a project five years in the making, according to one of the owners, Dave Bestwick. He is joined by Toby Wehr and Nathan Bacher in the new business venture.
Bestwick declined to say how much the 4,400-square-foot building at 1747 N. Main St. Extension cost, but he did say the trio plans to keep renovations to a minimum.
The building formerly housed Allegheny Auto Sales.
“We hope to move on the craft beer movement already established in Butler,” he said.
Bestwick and Wehr hope the business will be open by the end of the summer in 2017.
The company will focus on keeping as much of the services local as possible. The logos and T-shirts were designed locally, and any contractors used will be from the area as well.
Bestwick said the company is working on a deal that would send the brewery’s spent grains to a pig farm for feed, and in return, the brewery would buy the meat.
The brewing equipment will be manufactured locally as well.
Aside from being brewers, the trio are involved with emergency services. Wehr is the chief of the Butler Township Fire Department, and Bestwick is the assistant chief. Bacher is a paramedic with the Butler Ambulance Service.
