The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry has dropped a property lien against Butler County.

The state filed the removal at the county prothonotary’s office July 26.

County solicitor Mike English confirmed the lien was dropped due to the understanding the county pay $1,384 to settle an alleged debt of unpaid interest for unemployment compensation reimbursement.

“The lien was lifted in pursuant to the agreement between the county and state,” English said.

The state filed the lien April 14, listing $2,384 in unpaid interest.

Before liened property can be sold, the money owed to the creditor must be paid.

Although the lien named the courthouse as the affected property, that would not have necessarily precluded the state from receiving money upon the sale of any county property.

The county subsequently challenged the accuracy of the amount owed.

In early July, the county and state reached a verbal agreement.

Before the accord, the state sent a July 5 letter seeking $2,720. English stated in a July 8 letter that the agreement was reached for the county to pay $1,384.

The state in 2013 notified the county there was a possibility of erroneously calculated interest charges.

However, the July 5 letter claimed the interest charges through the first quarter of 2016 were accurate.

A department of labor spokesman could not be reached for comment.
