JACKSON TWP — A new salt shed and a traffic impact fee ordinance study will be funded by the township.

The township supervisors Monday morning approved the two items.

The new 50- x 80-foot salt shed will be built this fall on the township municipal building’s property for use this winter. It will have a 1,200-ton capacity.

“It’s really big,” township manager Chris Rearick said of the new shed. “We used more salt this past winter than we typically had, pretty much as much as we had before.”

The current shed has a 500-ton capacity. The township will soon have 700 tons of salt in storage.

The current shed will be used for either salt overflow or equipment storage.

“It didn’t seem to make sense to dismantle that,” Rearick said. “That way if the township grows, there may be a need to use that in addition.”

Rearick said the traffic impact fee ordinance update is needed because of interests in development, especially on Route 68.

“It’s also in the standpoint that we’ve been successful in completing projects initially planned and now have to look toward other projects,” he said.

But there are no firm plans for the area.

Herbert, Rowland & Grubic will be hired to test intersections for the study.
