A woman was injured this morning when she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on North Main Street hill in Butler, authorities said. The crash briefly closed the road and caused minor power outages.

A woman was injured this morning when she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on North Main Street hill in Butler, authorities said.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital and then transferred to an unspecified Pittsburgh hospital with moderate leg injuries, according to Butler police and firefighters.

Police did not immediately release her name.

The woman was traveling south downhill in the 600 block of North Main Street about 6:40 a.m. when her Jeep Liberty crossed over the northbound lane and slammed into the pole.

She was conscious and talking with rescuers as a Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to her.

Police Sgt. Ben Spangler said it was not known why she lost control of the vehicle, but he did not rule out fatigue or a medical condition.

The crash briefly closed the road during the morning commute while a wrecker removed the severely damaged Jeep and firefighters cleaned up the debris from the road.

A West Penn Power crew member said the damaged pole would have to be replaced. He also reported that electrical service was lost to some customers in the area.

Any outage there, said Rob Lombardo, area manager for West Penn Power, would have affected fewer than 50 customers.
