The Butler Redevelopment Authority is selling two of its properties in Butler.

The properties are an office building at 115 E. Cunningham St. and a lot at 150 S. Main St., which once was the site of the Wishing Well card store.

Authority board member Brian McCafferty said the authority will sell the properties to reduce expenses.

He said that the authority is no longer allowed to use state funds for the office building.

“Grant money was allowed to be used for that purpose, but as the state has changed a lot of its guidelines, with the money drying up, one of the things they’ve determined is we’re no longer allowed to use money to pay toward that office building,” McCafferty said.

The authority has hired Capers Real Estate to sell the two properties. That agency, which will receive a 6 percent commission, has place a market value of $159,000 on the office building, according to McCafferty.

Capers also will do a market analysis on the former Wishing Well property.

The authority has no prospective buyers for either property.

Talking about the former Wishing Well property, authority board member Cheri Readie said, “I think it would be best utilized if somebody else could buy it. We do have people that currently rent the space. Whoever purchases the land could continue to have that as well.”

McCafferty said the authority considered selling its single-family residential houses and an apartment building, but decided against it.

“Those apartment units that we rent out are mostly for low-income people, and if they’re gone, there’s not going to be many places in the city they can go to,” McCafferty said. “We’re trying to help those people out in the city who need that type of housing.”

The authority does not yet have a new location for its office, but McCafferty listed one of the authority’s vacant spaces in the Penn Theater building and office space in the parking garage on Cunningham Street to potentially be shared with Butler Downtown as possible sites.

Mayor Tom Donaldson supports selling the property.

“I think it’s good that they’re going to market those properties because that money is going to help keep them going,” he said.
