PITTSBURGH — Plans for a 10-story Hyatt Centric hotel to be built behind the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building has been approved by the city’s Historic Review Commission.

Wednesday’s approval completes the historic review of the $30 million project.

Opponents claimed the hotel would be too large and incompatible with the Oakland City Center historic district guidelines. The guidelines “encourage visual compatibility” with the rest of the area’s 19th and early 20th Century architecture.

The proposal calls for the 168-room hotel to be constructed in the parking lot of the 107-year-old athletic club, which was built in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace.
