SV's Drambel staying busy

Matt Drambel

JACKSON TWP — He only graduated from high school this month, but Seneca Valley’s Matt Drambel is already squeezing plenty out of life.

Consider this:

He played four varsity sports — three of them for multiple years — despite incurring two knee surgeries.

He maintained a 5.2 grade point average, ranking eighth in his graduating class of 581.

He does volunteer work for the food bank at St. Killian’s.

He volunteers at the Woodlands Foundation in Wexford.

He volunteers for the Miracle League of Cranberry Township.

“I’ve come to understand time management,” Drambel said. “I’ve gotten pretty good at it.”

He’s been rewarded for it as well.

Drambel was recently named to the US Lacrosse Boys Academic All-American team and is the Northern Area Athletic Directors Association Tri-Athlete of the Year.

“Only five WPIAL boys lacrosse players are on the national academic team,” SV boys lacrosse coach Lance Diamond said. “That’s a big honor, major recognition.

“Matt works hard at everything he does. He’s a defensive midfielder for us and doesn’t get many goals and assists as a result. But he’s one of the best players in the league at his position.”

Drambel was a wide receiver and cornerback for the Raider football team for two years before the two knee surgeries ended his grid career. Last fall, he played striker for the SV boys soccer team.

“I only scored one goal — the game-winner against Butler in overtime on Senior Night,” he said. “That was pretty cool.”

Drambel lettered three years in basketball as a shooting guard coming off the bench. He tallied five goals his senior season in lacrosse and was a three-year starter there.

“Not many people play three sports in high school anymore,” Drambel said. “It is really challenging and that Northern Area Athletic Directors award was something I wanted pretty badly.”

Drambel has a love for baseball as well. His father, Bill, played baseball and football at the University of Iowa and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1981. His prospective career was cut short by a torn rotator cuff.

Kathy Drambel, Matt’s mother, was a swimmer at Chartiers Valley High School.

“We’ve always been a sports-minded family,” Drambel said. “I volunteered for the Miracle League because I wanted to help kids learn how to play baseball and enjoy it like I did when I was a kid.”

Diamond said Drambel does volunteer work for the right reasons.

“He doesn’t do it to show off or draw attention to himself,” the coach said. “He does it because he wants to do it. He wants to help. He is a high quality kid.”

Drambel’s older sister, Meghan, was a two-time all-state volleyball player in high school. His younger brother, Michael, is a freshman at Seneca Valley and plays soccer, basketball and baseball.

“My favorite sport is whatever’s in season,” Drambel said. “I love all of them.”

Drambel will continue his education at Wake Forest University, where he plans to study pre-med and play club lacrosse. He hopes to become a cardiologist later in life.
