Charles W. Miller
Charles W. “Chuck” Miller, 87, of Valencia died Monday morning at Valencia Woods.
Born in Wilkinsburg on May 11, 1927, he was the son of the late K. Carolyn (Carrie) Miller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Stockdale Miller; one son, Timothy C. (Kimberly) Miller; his sister and brother-in-law, Opal and Warren Hessler; one sister-in-law, Shirley M.S. Kennedy; and two nephews.
He worked for the James Austin Co. for 32 years and the Butler Auto Auction for 10 years until 2004. Chuck had a passion for rebuilding antique cars and driving them in parades. He enjoyed playing with his grandsons. He was a member of the Mars Alliance Church, where he had been an usher. He was vice president of the Valencia Boy Scouts for many years. He and Arlene helped to collect and deliver items for the people of Appalachia.
Chuck joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 and was honorably discharged after serving from 1944 to 1952. He served on the New Jersey, the Oakland and the Raby, spending most of his time in the Pacific as a gunner's mate and specialized in fire training while stationed in Guam. After Hiroshima, his ship, the New Jersey, was one of the first ships to enter a Japanese harbor. He and Arlene enjoyed attending Navy reunions for over 20 years.
He is survived by his son, Lonnie E. Miller; his grandsons, Casey, (Nicole) Charles A. and Matthew Miller; his great-grandsons, Wyatt and Aiden Miller; his sister-in-law, Norma D.S. Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.
