No-hitter propels CWNC to win

Tunstall strikes out 8 batters in 6 innings

Nick Tunstall didn't need much help Friday afternoon at Kelly Automotive Park.

He received plenty regardless.

The Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic senior left-hander struck out eight and tossed a six-inning no-hitter as the Trojans shut out Riverview, 10-0, in Section 4-A baseball.

“Nick was outstanding today,” North Catholic coach John Haggerty said. “He throws in the low to mid-eighties and his fastball has a lot of movement. It's tough to catch up with.

“He's one of the best pitchers in the WPIAL. He's proving that.”

Tunstall is 2-0 this year — his other win being a two-hitter and complete game effort in a 9-1 win over Class AA Neshannock two weeks ago. He's been the starting pitcher every time the Trojans have faced Riverview since his sophomore year.

He's never lost to the Raiders.

“They'll be glad when he graduates,” Haggerty said.

The Trojans banged out 12 hits, including a perfect day at the plate for No. 2 hitter Jake Matschner. He collected three singles and a triple in four at-bats, scoring four runs and driving in two more.

Matschner had the hit that broke the game open. With two on and two out in the fourth inning and his team leading 3-0, Matschner tripled over the right fielder's head. He scored himself when the second baseman's relay throw to third was wild.

“We're not as bad as this final score,” Riverview coach Rich Griser said. “We're a young team and we made young mistakes.

“Twice, we had runners picked off and didn't throw them out. We let (wind-blown) fly balls fall in behind our infielders. We took poor angles on balls hit into the gap. We made it easier for them today.”

Riverview entered the game on a three-game winning streak, scoring 32 total runs in those games.

The Raiders' closest thing to a hit Friday was a wind-blown pop up by Brandon Davis in the third inning that fell behind second baseman Tyler Ellwood.

Right fielder Robert Schad alertly grabbed the ball and fired to second to force Will Medved, who had walked to start the frame.

“Our approach at the plate wasn't good today,” Griser said. “I didn't want our guys limiting themselves to one swing and we did that in too many at-bats.

“He (Tunstall) is a quality pitcher. We've faced him before and we know that. But we helped him today.”

Tunstall threw 97 pitches through six innings, 60 for strikes. He walked four batters and a fifth runner reached on an infield throwing error.

Riverview never had more than one runner on base in an inning.

“My curveball was bouncing in the dirt today,” Tunstall said. “I didn't have great command of it, so I relied on my fastball. I was putting that primarily where I wanted to.”

Schad had the game-winning hit in the first inning, a run-scoring triple to center. He helped to end the game with a two-run triple to center in the sixth.

Schad's second triple upped the Trojan lead to 9-0. Nick Nyman followed with a single to right, plating Schad and ending the game via the mercy rule.

The three-run sixth inning began with two outs and the bases empty.

Tunstall reached on an infield error and Matschner beat out an infield single to set up the game's final two hits.

“With Nick working on a no-hitter, I couldn't take him out of there,” Haggerty said. “At the same time, I was worried about his pitch count.

“I'm glad he didn't have to go out there for the seventh. We were squaring the ball up and hitting it hard. That was good to see.”

The no-hitter was Tunstall's first in high school baseball.

He's a four-year starter at North Catholic.

“I think that's my first one since Little League,” he said.

Tunstall and Matschner — who's hitting around .500 — are considering playing baseball for La Roche College next year. Tunstall is also looking at Point Park.

“They (La Roche) would love to get both of those guys,” Haggerty said.
