GC man faces charges after high-speed chase
SLIPPERY ROCK — A Grove City man remains jailed on felony and other charges stemming from a high-speed chase last week during which he nearly collided with two other vehicles.
The April 3 chase, which started in Slippery Rock and spanned two counties, ended when 28-year-old Joshua J. Dora stopped his car in the middle of a road and ran into the woods in Mercer County just northwest of the Butler County line, authorities said.
Dora, who also was wanted on a bench warrant in Mercer County, got away but was arrested the next day, Slippery Rock police said.
Borough police Lt. Brian Hoak initially came upon Dora about 5:15 p.m. in a 2006 Nissan Altima at the Slippery Rock Plaza parking lot on Grove City Road. Hoak walked up to the car and tried to arrest him. But Dora sped away, despite the officer ordering him to stop and even as shoppers were walking nearby, according to court documents.
Hoak got back into his police car and took off after him. The chase continued out of the borough north on Route 258. Police noted the road was wet from a steady rain.
While being pursued, Dora crossed a double yellow line to pass two vehicles in front of him. But the maneuver, documents said, forced two other oncoming vehicles off the road.
Police said speeds reached 90 mph on Route 258 as the suspect traveled into Mercer County. A short time later, Dora stopped and jumped out of the still running car on Moon Road just past Brent Road in Springfield Township.
Hoak stopped his cruiser and dashed for the unoccupied but moving car. He hopped in and pulled the car over safely.
Troopers from the Mercer and New Castle stations searched the woods where Dora was last seen running. His escape was short lived.
He was arrested April 4 and placed in the Mercer County Jail on the warrant.
On Tuesday, Dora was arraigned in Butler County on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment.
Additionally, he is charged with driving at an unsafe speed, reckless driving and three other traffic violation. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail following arraignment.
His preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in Slippery Rock.
