Fire started in woods destroys tractors, car

CHERRY TWP — The state police fire marshal’s office is investigating what started a fire in woods Monday afternoon that burned two tractors, a car and other items outside a home near Branchton Road.

Several acres of woods at Victor Kennedy’s home on Windy Road were also damaged, authorities said.

The fire call came into the Butler County Communications Center at 1:45 p.m. Kennedy was at work but his wife was at home.

Several fire departments were called to battle the growing woods and brush fire. No one was hurt and no structures were reported damaged but a number of items that were outside on Kennedy’s property got caught up in the fire.

Destroyed was a John Deere compact utility tractor, Husqvarna lawn tractor, a 1966 Mercedes coupe and lumber.

In all, damage was estimated at $25,000, according to a police report.

Responding to the reported woods fire were firefighters from West Sunbury, Marion Township, Harrisville and Slippery Rock. Crews remained on the scene until about 3:30 p.m.

Trooper David Jungling, the investigating fire marshal, could not be reached for comment. A telephone call to Victor Kennedy was not immediately returned this morning.
