Blaze blamed on wood burner
EAST BUTLER — A wood burner used as a fireplace started a blaze that spread to an East Butler Road home Monday afternoon.
“It sort of ignited the floor joist,” said Chief Kevin Hesidenz of the East Butler Volunteer Fire Department.
Hesidenz said the flames then went up the wall at 105 Old East Butler Road.
“It could have been a lot worse,” he said.
No injuries were reported. The occupants' names were unavailable.
Hesidenz said the burner's pipe might have needed cleaned after being used all winter to heat the home.
“It could have been creosote buildup,” he said.
Hesidenz estimated damages at $5,000.
Roughly 20 firefighters responded to the 1:26 p.m. 911 call. The Herman, Oneida Valley and Mercer Road volunteer fire departments assisted East Butler.
Crews cleared the scene at 2:25 p.m.
