Clarion hires Weibel

Clarion University announced Friday that East Brady native Chris Weibel will take over as head coach of its football program. Weibel quarterbacked the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Division II semifinals in 1996.

CLARION — Before Clarion University chose Chris Weibel as its new football coach Friday afternoon, he spent much of December discussing whether he should apply for the job with his family.

While breaking down the scenarios, the then-interim coach came to a quick decision. Clarion's always been his passion.

“I found out what I knew all along. I'd pretty much be an idiot not to apply for the job,” said Weibel, 40, who is an East Brady native and 1998 Clarion University graduate.

Golden Eagles Assistant Sports Information Director Chris Rossetti said more than 70 people applied. Weibel was named the interim coach Dec. 15 after Jay Foster retired after posting a 29-70 record in nine seasons.

Clarion's best finish under Foster was an 8-3 campaign in 2009.

Clarion Athletic Director Dave Katis was impressed with Weibel's plan for the program.

“He relayed that vision during the process, along with demonstrating all the qualities we were looking for in a head coach,” Katis said in a news release. “He knows football, has a passion for Clarion University, the football program and our alumni, plus is dedicated to retaining and graduating our student-athletes.”

During the coaching search, Weibel was tasked with recruiting players even though he wasn't sure what coaching position he would have.

Clarion has seven players committed, including Seneca Valley's Mason Dehart.

Making the sales pitch, Weibel said he stressed honesty about his situation. Now that he's been hired, Weibel's been pounding the phones to round out his first recruiting class.

“Now that it's out, I've called a lot of guys already. There were a lot of guys on the edge and I think this will help make a decision for them.” Weibel said. “We're very honest and up-front. We're honest with the kids and they respect that.”

Before taking over as head coach, Weibel was the Golden Eagles' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons and an assistant coach for the past 11.

Weibel's hoping to bring success back to Clarion. When he was the Golden Eagles' quarterback, he helped lead the program through a successful stretch that was highlighted by a trip to the NCAA Division II playoff semifinals in 1996.

Bringing the passion back is a major goal for Weibel.

“Being excited myself,” Weibel said. “The guys know and they've known me for along time. I'm an excited and enthusiastic guy. ... When the Clarion community and the university see that, they'll jump right in.

“Everyone wants to be apart of an enthusiastic, successful program.”
