Walowen

Victor Walowen, 80, of Butler passed away Saturday at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on May 20, 1933, in Lyndora, the son of the late Frank and Anna (Bogden) Walowen.

Vic was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having joined the Navy in 1953 and served in the Korean War. He was named Honor Man of his class and spent two years aboard the submarine tender the USS Proteus, as well as two years aboard a CVS class aircraft carrier.

He retired from Armco after 40 years of service.

Vic was an outdoorsman's outdoorsman. He loved spending time at his Silver Creek camp, fondly recalled his Maine fishing trips and enjoyed poker at deer camp with his friends, as well as traveling to the casinos. The only thing he loved more than the time he spent outdoors was spending time with his family and friends.

He had two sons but was a “Dad” to so many more. Vic was a Cub Scout leader, a coach, the neighborhood barber for the kids of Butler Street, and much more to those who knew him. He loved to take his sons, “adopted kids,” nieces, nephews and so many more camping, fishing and hunting. He readily accepted and loved his stepchildren and grandchildren as his own and selflessly gave to everyone who knew him. He touched everyone with his generosity of spirit, kindness, incredible work ethic, toughness in the face of adversity and commitment to those around him.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Walowen of Butler; his two sons, Peter (Amy) Walowen of Petrolia and David Walowen of Butler; his stepdaughter, Sherry (Tom) M. Koegler of Sarver; his three stepsons, Bill (Cindy) Kriess, Bob (Becky) Kriess and Dale (Kris) Kriess, all of Butler; his 16 grandchildren; his four great-grandchildren; his three sisters, Nelly (Harry) Kuzmenchuk of New Jersey, Olga (Warren) Cochran of Butler and Mary Ann (Bill) Zulick of Renfrew; his brother, Walter (Lolly) Walowen of Denver, Colo.; and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank (June) Walowen of Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sylvia; and his two brothers, Frank and George.

Walowen — The friends of Victor Walowen, who passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, will be received at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.Services will be at the St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Jefferson St., Butler, at 11 a.m. Thursday with his pastor, the Rev. Alden Towberman, officiating.Interment will be in Butler County Memorial Park.
