Internet use lands sex offender in hot water
BUTLER TWP — A convicted sex offender was arrested Tuesday after state police learned he had an unregistered account on a social networking website.
Daniel M. Rodgers, 32, of Buffalo Township was arraigned on a pair of felony charges and placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.
Rodgers’ alleged violation was discovered this month during a spot check investigation, according to court documents.
Police said they determined he had a Facebook page with his photographs. The account had been updated as recent as Jan. 9
In Pennsylvania, sex offenders are required to register Internet and social media site names.
Investigators arrested Rodgers at his Shaw Lane home.
During an interview, police said, he admitted he had been using the account since December 2009.
District Judge Kevin O’Donnell arraigned Rodgers on two counts of failing to comply with registration of sexual offenders requirements, a third-degree felony. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 23.
Rodgers is a Tier 1 sex offender, the lowest classification under Megan’s Law, meaning he is required to verify his address and other information with state police annually for 15 years.
He has been on the Megan’s Law registry since 2010 after a conviction for corruption of minors. In that case, Butler police arrested Rodgers on charges that he fondled a 10-year-old girl in Butler in 2009.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 to 14 months in county prison. He also had to participate in sex offender counseling and treatment.
