Employees may get 3% raise

County salary board will vote on Wednesday

The rest of Butler County’s 173 nonunion employees may get 3 percent raises this year.

The county salary board, which is comprised of the three commissioners and the controller, are to vote Wednesday on whether to give the pay hike to the 168 workers who did not receive it in a Dec. 18 vote.

Although commissioners Bill McCarrier and Dale Pinkerton attempted to give the 3 percent raise to all 173 workers at the Dec. 18 meeting, Commissioner Jim Eckstein and former Controller Jack McMillin refused to support the move.

However, five county employees ended up getting the raise because three row officers attended that meeting.

Each row officer gets a vote on salary board issues that affect their respective offices.

Sheriff Mike Slupe, Treasurer Diane Marburger and District Attorney Richard Goldinger made separate motions to give raises for their respective offices. Each got a majority vote.

The county’s other row officers — clerk of courts, recorder of deeds, register of wills/clerk of orphans’ court, prothonotary and coroner — requested salary board votes on Wednesday for their office staffs.

Court-related employees could be impacted as well.

County President Judge Thomas Doerr and Chief Public Defender Kevin Flaherty, who get salary board votes regarding their areas of government, also requested votes.

The salary board may reconsider giving the 3 percent raise to employees falling under the commissioners’ authority and the controller’s staff.

New Controller Ben Holland replaces McMillin on the board, which did not discuss the proposed pay hike at its meeting Monday.
