East Brady man jailed in tractor shop burglary
KARNS CITY — It didn’t take long for state police to identify a suspect in last month’s break-in at Barton Tractor in the borough.
The owner immediately thought he recognized the burglar from surveillance video inside the business. The suspect, 20-year-old Travis R. Duttinee of East Brady, Clarion County, used to date owner Brent Barton’s daughter, according to court documents.
Police on Monday arrested Duttinee on charges he forced his way inside Barton Tractor on Dec. 2 or 3 and stole about $160 in currency.
Earlier that day during an interview, the defendant confessed to the crime, police said.
Duttinee said he and another man planned the burglary but that he entered the building alone, documents said.
“He advised that the reason they committed this crime,” a police affidavit said, “was because they needed money to purchase heroin.”
Investigators Monday also interviewed Duttinee’s alleged accomplice, identified in court papers as Tony Reid Koegler of Karns City.
Koegler admitted he and Duttinee drove together to the business on Petrolia Street, armed with a crow bar and hammer, police said.
He claimed he stayed outside and acted as the look out while Duttinee broke in.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Monday arraigned Duttinee on charges of burglary, trespass, theft, conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, and criminal mischief.
He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $20,000 bail, following arraignment. A preliminary hearing is set at 2:45 p.m. Jan. 7 at Stoughton’s office in Chicora.
Koegler was not immediately charged in the case. Police said their investigation continues.
Duttinee, meanwhile, is a suspect in other burglaries and thefts in Butler County, police said.
