Lawyer will run for state House

Tedd Nesbit
8th District seat up for grabs in '14

GROVE CITY — A Grove City lawyer is the first announced candidate to replace state Rep. Dick Stevenson.

Tedd Nesbit, a Republican, announced Friday that he wants to represent residents of the 8th District. He will run in the primary election on May 20.

“I want to help Pennsylvania move forward and become a state where our children have the opportunity to find good-paying jobs, buy a home and be able to educate and raise their families,” Nesbit said in a statement.

Stevenson of Grove City announced in December that he would retire. The Republican came to the state House of Representatives in 2001.

“He has been an admirable representative, and I want to serve this district as well as he has,” Nesbit said.

He said job growth is one of the most important issues facing the state, and said it needs to have a business climate that allows businesses to hire new employees.

“I want our state to work with businesses and not against them by keeping taxes and regulations low,” Nesbit said.

Education also is another big issue, he said. He wants to work to make sure that schools efficiently prepare students for jobs. He also wants to work to encourage students to explore vocational and technical training because there are a lot of jobs in the trades.

He also is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

Nesbit is an assistant district attorney in Mercer County and a partner in Bartholomew, Mudrinich & Nesbit, which has offices in Grove City and Hermitage. He has been a guardian ad litem for Mercer County Children and Youth Services and has been a solicitor for several municipalities in Mercer County.

Having worked with municipalities, he said he has seen the strain the state puts on local government. He also has seen the struggles of business owners and their employees.

“I have friends and family members that have lost their jobs in this down economy and think we can do better,” Nesbit said.

He has been an active volunteer, serving both the East Main Presbyterian Church as an elder and a youth choir director, and he has served as president of the Grove City United Way. He is the coach for the Slippery Rock Community Swim Team.

After growing up in Grove City, Nesbit earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and later earned a law degree from the Thomas Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich.

Nesbit, 46, lives with his wife, Shannon, and his four children.

In Butler County, the 8th District covers Brady, Center, Cherry, Clay, Concord, Fairview, Franklin, Jackson, Lancaster, Marion, Mercer, Muddy Creek and Worth townships and Fairview, Harmony, Harrisville, Karns City, Petrolia, Portersville, Prospect, West Liberty, West Sunbury and Zelienople.

It also covers southeastern Mercer County, including Grove City.
