School buses crash; 3 Knoch students hurt

JEFFERSON TWP — Three South Butler School District students were injured and taken to Butler Memorial Hospital after one school bus rear-ended another on Dinnerbell Road Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 12:30 p.m. near Pizza Joe’s restaurant, between Knoch High School and Route 8. Both buses were transporting students from Knoch High School and Knoch Middle School. The buses were traveling west, toward Route 8, at the time. The conditions of the students taken to the hospital were unavailable.

Police said one of the bus drivers did not recognize that the bus in front had stopped, resulting in the collision.

Police did not file any charges in the case.

In a prepared statement, South Butler spokesman Jason Davidek said students who weren’t taken to the hospital were reunited with parents on campus later that afternoon, after other buses had taken them there. Davidek added that some parents took precautionary measures to have their children examined by family doctors or local care centers.

State police handled the scene, with Penn Township Police Department and Saxonburg Fire Department, Butler EMS, and South Butler School District officials assisting.
