Jackson Township has no tax increase

$3.1 million budget OK'd

JACKSON TWP — There will be no tax increase for residents next year after the township supervisors unanimously approved a spending plan for 2014.

The budget plans for an expected $2.8 million in revenue and $3.1 million in expenditures. The resulting $352,000 deficit will be covered by a transfer of money from the budget’s general fund.

Supervisor Gary Goehring said this will be at least the 15th consecutive year that Jackson Township hasn’t raised property taxes for its residents.

The property tax rate remained set at 7.875 mills, which means residents there will pay 78.7 cents per every $100 of the assessed value of their home.

The capital reserve portion of the budget calls for $585,000 next year for the renovation of the township’s municipal building along Magill Road.

It also plans for $35,000 for a new police vehicle and $8,000 for new police vests.

In terms of revenue, manager Chris Rearick said he expects a plot of land owned by the township to be sold sometime in the first quarter of 2014, a sale that could net up to $550,000.

That land is located along Tollgate School Road.

Rearick said he’s pleased with the progress the township has made during the past several years, adding that 25 percent of its roads have been reconstructed or repaired in the past two years alone.

That progress includes significant commercial and residential growth with the addition of Jackson’s Pointe, a sizable complex constructed near the intersection of Routes 19 and 528.

The supervisors also recently issued permits for 63 single-family units for a planned residential development along Tollgate School Road.

The money coming in from new development, land sales and gas royalties from Marcellus Shale drilling have allowed the township to minimize its debt service without depleting the reserve fund, Rearick said.
