Adams approves budget for 2014
ADAMS TWP — Supervisors have held the line on taxes for the 25th consecutive year.
The supervisors voted 4-0 on Wednesday to approve a 2014 budget of $10.6 million with no tax increase.
Supervisor Linda Lees did not attend the meeting.
The last tax increase in the growing municipality was in 1989.
The millage rate will stay at 3.75 mills next year although the budget amount has increased by $2.1 million over this year’s $8.5 million. One mill is equal to $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed valuation.
One mill in the township brings in about $164,261.
The supervisors vice chairman, Tom Franceschina, said the budget increase over last year will be covered by a $3 million carry-over from this year.
He said a mild winter last year plus the cancellation of a handful of capital improvement projects provided the carry-over.
The gap between the approximate $615,000 in property tax revenue and the budget’s $10.6 million in expenses is made up through revenue from wage taxes, real estate transfer taxes and the park and recreation fee attached to permits for new home construction, Franceschina said.
The supervisors included increases in the amount they will donate to the Mars Public Library and the Callery Volunteer Fire Department in 2014.
The library will receive an increase of $25,000, making next year’s total donation $125,000.
The Callery fire department, which responds to every call in Adams Township along with Adams Area Fire District, will get a bump of $37,000.
Callery’s appropriation from Adams will total $115,000 next year.
