Football field survey gets OK
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The Slippery Rock School Board on Monday approved spending $2,800 on a land survey of the high school’s aging football stadium.
Board Vice President Greg Angerett said the stadium, built off Route 173 in the mid 1960s, is getting to the point where it may not be able to pass inspections, and the board needs to look at options for upgrading it.
Paul Cessar, district business manager, said in an interview that the stadium has poor lighting which was installed in the 1980s, has problems with flooding and pooling on the field and in the track area, and has bleachers with little handicap accessibility,
He said the district would like to get better lighting and drainage, improve the bleachers, expand the visitor’s bleachers and get a track that could be used for competitions.
Currently, the school’s track and field team uses the track at Slippery Rock University.
Cessar said a survey, which would look at things such as drainage, elevation and the location of structures on the land, is necessary before looking at options to fix the field.
“It’s a very preliminary start,” Cessar said.
Board President Polly Shaw said the district cannot do anything with the stadium until the survey is done.
“This is just a start,” Shaw said. “It is step one of what is apparently a very long list.”
The RAR Engineering Group of New Castle will do the survey.
