BASA OKs pay raise for non-union workers

The Butler Area Sewer Authority on Tuesday approved pay increases for non-union administrative workers.

Salaries for the nine workers will increase between about 2 to 3 percent, according to Tom Rockovich, the executive director.

Rockovich said the salary range this year for the workers was from about $48,000 to $102,000, with his job being the highest paying.

The positions include different levels of administrative work as well as three engineers.

Rockovich said the board used an evaluation of personnel to help determine the individual raises. It also compared salaries of the positions to similar facilities in the area.

The board also established an official vacation policy for the non-union workers. Rockovich said the new agreement will provide the administrative workers the same tiered vacation schedule as the union workers.

Before the agreement, the non-union workers worked without a set vacation policy.

Employees will receive six vacation days per year during the first couple years with the authority, while the maximum amount of time off is 24 days per year for workers with 20 years of service.

Rockovich said the board now must work to reach an agreement with the union workers, whose contract expires at the end of the month.

The union, representing about 30 workers, last signed a deal with the authority three years ago.

Rockovich hopes the two sides will reach an agreement before the contract expires, but added there is work to be done.

The board also approved a severance agreement with Dan Fisher, the superintendent of the sewage plant for the authority.

Fisher, 55, is retiring after 35 years.

Rockovich said Fisher supervises union workers and the plant’s day-to-day operations.

Rockovich said the board decided to keep Fisher on as a part-time consultant until a replacement is found.
