Butler Twp advances to Super Regional
BOARDMAN, Ohio — The Butler Township 16U Colt baseball team has reached a new level.
Butler blanked North Allegheny 8-0 on Sunday to claim the Section championship of the East Zone-West Region tournament in Boardman, Ohio.
Butler bested five teams by going 3-1 in the double-elimination event and advanced to the East Zone-West Super Region tourney, which starts Thursday in Struthers, Ohio. The Super Regional — featuring 10 teams from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia — is also a double-elimination format and the winner earns a trip to Greensboro, N.C. for the East Zone championship.
Butler is familiar with the caliber of competition at Super Regionals, but hopes to take a step further.
“We’ve played there before and had some success, but we’ve never made it through,” said Butler coach John Baranchak. “With the way we’ve been playing lately, I hope it carries over. If we play our game, we can compete with anybody.”
Butler won the Section tournament thanks to stellar pitching and a well-balanced offensive attack.
Jesse Savisky twirled a complete-game shutout in Sunday’s championship-clinching victory against North Allegheny.
“He pitched an outstanding game,” said Baranchak. “It was one of the best I’ve seen pitched at any level in a long time.
“He’s got a lot of talent,” he added. “He came up big when we needed him.”
Savisky was also one of six Butler players to hit .400 or better during the weekend. He batted at a .600 clip, going 6-for-10 with three walks.
Luke Baranchak and Jeremy Moorhead — the No. 1 and 2 hitters for Butler — served as spark plugs.
Moorhead hit .533 (8-for-15), while Baranchak was at .438 (7-for-16).
No. 3 hitter Garrett Goslaw reaped the benefits with six RBIs while hitting .417 (5-for-12). Lake Sankey also went 5-for-12 and Alex Harrison hit an even .400 at 4-for-10.
Butler started the run to a Section crown on Friday with an 8-1 win over Peters Township, which entered the tournament with a 22-1 record.
“There’s no easy teams in these tournaments,” said Baranchak. “Peters Township was one of the favorites. We beat a solid team.”
Mark Gross tossed a complete game against Peters Township and surrendered just one unearned run.
“He set the tone for us,” said Baranchak. “He was totally dominant in that game.”
After dispersing Peters Township, Butler played North Allegheny three consecutive times.
Butler won the first matchup on Saturday by a 6-4 margin to clinch a spot in the championship while sending NA to the loser’s bracket.
Nick Reamer went the distance in the victory and only one run was earned.
“He pitched a whale of a game,” said Baranchak.
North Allegheny topped Pine-Richland to emerge from the loser’s bracket, but needed to beat Butler twice to win the tournament.
NA played in a league with 17- to 19-year-olds during the regular season and proved to be a tough out. John Smiley, a 20-game winner for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1991 who enjoyed a 12-year MLB career, was one of North Allegheny’s coaches.
“They played up all year against better competition,” said Baranchak. “It definitely turns into a rivalry when you play a team three times.”
NA earned a 7-5 win to force a winner-take-all scenario, but Butler prevailed behind Savisky’s gem.
Butler opens Super Regional play on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Beaver County at Cene Park, which is the home of Youngstown State University.
Other team members include: Nick Delano, Reid Werth and Connor Thomas.
“We’ve played in this before,” said Baranchak. “Most of the team that come here are league all-star teams or recruited teams. We’ll be one of the few teams that’s a league team from one city.”
