Gourley hits 3 HRs at Laura Doerr

JEFFERSON TWP — Call it the game of a lifetime — so far.

PJ Gourley is only 14.

The Saxonburg Knights’ pitcher-first baseman drilled three homers — including a grand slam — while adding two doubles, nine RBI and five runs scored in five at bats Monday evening. His team defeated Pine Richland, 19-6, in North Hills Federation Pony League play at Laura Doerr Park.

Gourley’s grand slam ended the game via the mercy rule in the fifth inning.

“I never hit two balls out of the park in one game before, let alone three,” Gourley said. “I had two inside-the-park homers in a Little League game once.”

Gourley hit one home run each over the left, center and right field fence Monday. He nearly added a fourth homer, but his line drive hit the base of the left field fence.

“All five of those hits were solid line drives,” Knights assistant coach John Gourley, PJ’s father, said. “He was just locked in at the plate.

“PJ has a quick swing, very fast hands. He’s been on fire the past three games and he’s beginning to drive the ball.”

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed hitter had one home run on the season entering Monday. He is hitting above .500 and leads the team in RBI.

“I’ve been coaching baseball in this area for the past seven years and haven’t seen a kid have a game like that,” Knights coach Mike Hickey said.

“None of those home runs were cheap. They were shots.”

Gourley will be a freshman at Knoch High School this fall. He plans to play baseball and basketball for the Knights.

He had been playing travel baseball for Beaver Valley the past few years, but not this season.

“I learned to hit outside pitches playing travel ball because that’s how teams pitched me,” Gourley said. “Being able to drive the ball the other way has made me a better hitter.”

Gourley’s mother, Kristi, missed most of her son’s performance Monday.

“I was working the concession stand at the time ... I guess I’m banished to there now,” she said. “A boy got hit by a ball on the other field and I was getting ice for him when someone tole me PJ just hit a grand slam.

“I knew he had already hit two. I thought they were kidding.”

Gourley’s main prowess is as a pitcher. A right-hander on the mound, he has allowed just one run in 30 innings pitched this season and is averaging two strikeouts per inning.

The Saxonburg Knights are 11-3 on the season and lead their section in the North Hills Federation League. The team won the Allegheny River League championship last season.
