Park programs range from fishing to bird watching
Here are events scheduled at Moraine State Park, McConnells Mill State Park and Jennings Environmental Education Center this summer.
Moraine State Park
Moraine State Park is off Route 422 in Brady, Franklin, Muddy Creek and Worth townships. The park office can be reached at 724-368-8811.
• PA Hiking Week: Leave No Trace Hikes, Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to noon.
A hiking team will lead a three-mile hike starting at the McDanel’s Launch area on the North Shore. The hike will be on the North Country Trail and will include information to help hikers learn how to “tread lightly.”
• Dog Hike, PA Hiking Week, Saturday, 10 to 11:30 a.m.
This is a two-mile hike starting at the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore and followed by a “doggie swim” in Lake Arthur. Only friendly and vaccinated dogs will be permitted. Dogs must remain on a leash and owners should bring a waste bag.
• Fish For Free days, May 27 and July 4, 7 to 9:30 a.m.
These allow anyone to fish in Lake Arthur without a fishing license.
• Explore Offshore, June 1 and June 16, 10 a.m. to noon.
This program allows people to kayak and explore the ecology of Lake Arthur. Participants can bring their own kayak or borrow one at the park.

• Historic Oil Well Operation, June 8, July 13, Aug. 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This allows guests to see a turn-of-the-century oil well and pump operate. Staff will operate the well and answer questions. The pump is on Park Road off Route 528.
• National Get Outdoors Day, June 8, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Free activities offered include kayaking, biking, using a GPS, fishing, playing disc golf, and having children’s activities. A bike rodeo will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The event will be at Lakeview Beach on the North Shore.
• Family Fishing Program, June 15 and July 27, 1 to 4 p.m.
This interactive program will include some basics on being a S.M.A.R.T. angler, as well as how to rig a fishing rod, types of bait, knot tying, rules and regulations, and casting practice. Participants are not required to have a fishing license while participating in the program. Fishing equipment will be provided.
Families must be preregistered and should arrive at 1 p.m. Preregister by calling the park office at 724-368-8811.
• Silver Paddle, June 18, July 23, Aug. 27, 9 to 11 a.m.
This entry-level program is designed to help those more interested in an easy peaceful experience and nature watching rather than a long hard paddle. Participants can bring their own kayak or borrow one of the park’s.

• Purple Martins, June 22, 10 a.m. to noon.
Participants will meet at Pavilion 7 at McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore. Identification, migration, and nesting habits will be some of the things discussed. Participate in a nest check and get a look at baby Purple Martins.
• Bluebirds: The Fledging Experience, June 22, 1 to 3 p.m.
This program will discuss the bluebird’s history, biology, courtship, nest site selection, egg laying, and brooding right up to fledging and what happens after they have fledged. It will look at nest box construction and what is needed to attract bluebirds to backyards. A short hike to explore a few bluebird boxes will be included. Participants will meet at pavilion 7 at the McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore.
• Full Moon Paddle, June 23 and July 22 from 8 to 10 p.m., Aug. 21 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
This will allow people to kayak in the moonlight. Participants can bring their own kayak or borrow one at the park.

• DiscoverE Outdoor Explorer’s “Outdoor Survival,” Tuesdays from June 25 to July 9, 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m.
Children ages 6 to 8 are invited to become outdoor explorers, using games, creative crafts and hands-on experience. The programs are filled with outdoor fun with time to reflect and learn.
The cost is $5 per child, per session. Space is extremely limited. Register by calling the park at 724-368-3612.
• DiscoverE Hide N Seekers “Look in the Lake,” Thursdays from June 27 to July 18, 10:30 a.m. to noon or 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Children ages 4 to 5 are invited to become Hide N Seekers as we take a “look in the lake.” Hide N Seekers is developed to meet the curiosity and the attention span of the younger child. The program combines safe, playful outdoor activities with hands-on explorations, stories and crafts.

• Fireflies!, June 28, 8 to 9:30 p.m.
Participants will find out about the unique lives of fireflies and how people can help scientists by counting and observing fireflies in their backyards. It will take place at the Lakeview Beach picnic area on the North Shore.
• Geocaching 101, July 14, 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Participants will meet the park naturalist at the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore to learn about and take part in some geocaching. The park has several GPS units that will be available to participants to use during the program.
• DiscoverE Penn’s Adventurers “Extreme Outdoors,” Mondays from July 22 to Aug. 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Children ages 9 to 12 can become Penn’s Adventurers, building outdoor skills using natural resources and encouraging healthy experiences through recreation. Biking, kayaking and fishing are just a few of the activities. Participants should bring a lunch.

• Bats In Action, July 26, 8 to 9:30 p.m.
Participants will meet the park naturalist at the Mount Zion Baptist Church on Route 528 to see a bat condo in action and explore these nighttime insectivores. Participants should bring blankets, chairs and bug protection.
• Lake Arthur Regatta, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Activities include live entertainment, water, air, and land events, craft and food vendors, children’s activities, homemade sailboats, canoe, kayak and sailboat races. There will be Saturday night fireworks. Music performances will occur both afternoons. Donations are accepted, but admission is free.
• Learn To Kayak, Aug. 24, 9 a.m. to noon.
Park staff will teach basic kayaking skills. All kayaks and safety equipment will be provided.

McConnells Mill State Park
The park is in Lawrence County off Route 422 near its intersection with Route 19.
• PA Hiking Week: Leave No Trace Hikes, Saturday, 1:30 to 4 p.m.
This is a two-mile hike over challenging terrain, with hikers meeting in the gristmill courtyard. The hike will be on the North Country Trail and will include information and activities to help hikers learn how to “tread lightly.”
• PA Hiking Week: Geology of Slippery Rock Gorge, Sunday, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Participants will learn about the Slippery Rock Gorge on a hike along the Alpha Pass Trail, part of the North Country Trail. Hikers will meet at the Point parking lot, where Johnson Road joins McConnells Mill Road, and should dress for the outdoors, ready to hike on the moderately rough trail, about 1.5 miles. They should bring water and wear sturdy shoes.
• Fish For Free days, May 27 and July 4, 7 to 9:30 a.m.
These allow anyone to fish in Lake Arthur without a fishing license.
• Hell’s Hollow By Night, June 14, 8:30 to 10 p.m.
Hikers will walk on Hell’s Hollow trail in search of bats, owls and fox. Participants should bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes and meet park staff at the Hell’s Hollow parking lot.
• A Taste of History: Dutch oven Cooking, June 16, July 21 and Aug. 11, noon to 3:30 p.m.
People may visit the courtyard of the historic gristmill to see Dutch oven cooking and sample Native American and pioneer cooking. Participants should park at Kildoo Picnic Area and hike down to the old mill.
• Hell’s Hollow Industrial History Hike, July 7, 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Hikers will join the park naturalist for a leisurely walk along a lovely trail. Hikers will learn about the iron smelting, charcoal making and lime processing that took place there. Hikers will meet at the Hell’s Hollow parking lot.
• Mill Cleanup Day, Aug. 17, 9 a.m. to noon.
Participants will clean the historic gristmill and should come dressed in work clothes. Participants should bring work gloves and wear sturdy shoes, and meet at the old mill. Lunch will be provided. Register by calling 724-368-8811.
Jennings Environmental Education Center
The center on Route 528 in Brady Township, 12 miles north of Butler, is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
• Celebrate The Bloom!, July 20, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This event allows people to experience the center’s blazing star prairie, the only protected prairie in the state. It will include a day of activities, including walks, workshops, demonstrations and a bonfire, plus food, vendors and entertainment.
