3 county baseball youths All Americans
Dallas Hays, Cole Shinsky and Brandon Fleeger haven’t played an inning of high school baseball yet.
They are nationally known on the diamond regardless.
All three Butler County residents are members of the Beaver Valley Red baseball program — a youth travel ball organization — and have played in tournaments up and down the east coast.
Each has been named TravelballSelect All American for his performance last season.
“Basically, they are among the top 20 players at their position in their age group in the country,” Beaver Valley Red coach Brian Smith said.
Smith nominated each player, but they achieve All-American status by receiving votes from opposing coaches who saw them play during national tournaments. No coach may vote for his own players.
“My nomination gets them on the ballot, then I’m out of the picture,” Smith said. “For Pennsylvania kids to impress coaches from teams in Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, where they play baseball year round, and make this list is quite an achievement.
“And these guys deserve it. They are that good.”
Hays, an eighth grader at Butler Junior High and a straight-A student, has been a shortstop in the Beaver Valley Red system for three years. Now 14, he’s been playing the position since he was six.
“I like it because you get to be a team leader,” Hays said. “It’s my favorite position.”
Hays hit .563 last season on a team that won 64 of its 72 games. He led Beaver Valley in home runs , batting average and on base percentage and made the U-13 All American team.
“Dallas has great power and great speed,” Smith said. “He steals bases and is our leadoff hitter. We play on fields with fences 300 feet away and that’s a good poke for kids this age.
“Dallas hit a few homers for us leading off games. He hit four or five homers in the Disney national championships alone.”
Shinsky is a freshman at Knoch and a 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher and first baseman. He made the 13-under All America team as well.
Already throwing a fastball in the upper 70’s, Shinsky averaged more than a strikeout per inning for 100 innings last summer and fashioned a 1.87 earned run average. Offensively, he hit .480.
He’s been playing with Beaver Valley since age 9.
“It’s definitely helped develop me as a player,” Shinsky said of the numerous travel tournaments. “I’ve gotten used to facing the best hitters and the best pitchers.”
“That kid isn’t done growing yet and he’s very fast and athletic for someone his size,” Smith said. “We call him The Big Donkey because he was a foot taller than anyone else on the team.
“He has tremendous footwork at first base. He’s one of the best fielders at that position I’ve seen.”
Shinsky is a two-time TravelballSelect All American, receiving the honor for the first time last year.
Fleeger, a Butler resident, made the 12-under team as a first baseman-pitcher. He belted 25 home runs last season.
“His fastball approaches 70 miles per hour. He throws extremely hard for someone his age,” Smith said. “Brandon has an outstanding arm.
“All of these kids excel in the classroom, too.”
Fleeger won the King of Swat Home Run Derby in Cooperstown, N.Y., in the summer of 2011.
