Sex offender faces charge

Police: He failed to give address

A convicted sex offender is accused of failing to notify state police he had moved to a new home.

Butler police Wednesday arrested Corey Detwiler, 25, on three felony charges of violating Megan’s Law. He is in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.

A roundup of suspected drug dealers led to the chance finding that Detwiler no longer lived at 511 W. Wayne St., according to court documents.

Under state law, sex offenders must annually confirm their address with state police. They also must immediately notify police when they move, change employment or enroll in school.

Detwiler in June, when he last registered his address with state police, listed his home on West Wayne Street.

Authorities learned of his new living arrangements Nov. 30 when the county drug task force officers served an arrest warrant at a home in the 300 block of Liberty Street.

Officers had gone there looking for another man on drug trafficking charges. But they found Detwiler.

He had apparently been living there with his girlfriend for about a month, documents said.

District Judge Pete Shaffer on Wednesday arraigned Detwiler on charges of failing to comply with registration of sexual offenders requirements, failing to verify his address, and failing to provide accurate information to police.

Detwiler was deemed a sexual offender stemming from his conviction for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in Butler in 2006

He pleaded no contest in 2007 to charges of sexual assault and corruption, and was sentenced to a 3- to 6-year stint in state prison.

In addition to the prison time, Detwiler was ordered to spend three years on probation.

Detwiler already is awaiting trial in county court for an attempted crack cocaine deal this summer in Butler.
