PENN TWP — The 17th annual West Penn Inter-Club Mixed Doubles Junior Tennis Championships take place Friday at the Butler Country Club courts.

Defending champion Butler Junior Tennis will be joined by seven other club from throughout Western Pennsylvania, including host Butler Country Club and Oxford Athletic Club out of Wexford.

Other participating teams include Sewickley Area Junior Tennis, Edgeworth, Mt. Lebanon Junior Tennis, Club Sport and Health in Monroeville and the Forest Hills Swim Club.

The tournament had six teams last year.

“I’m excited because we have more teams this year, all four areas of Western Pennsylvania will be represented and a number of highly skilled players are participating,” said Whitney Snyder, BCC tennis pro and the tournament director.

Among those highly skilled players are Caroline Ross of Edgeworth Country Club, a PIAA girls tennis doubles champion this year, and Anne Baich of Mt. Lebanon, one of the top high school players in Western Pennsylvania.

Each team will have an age 18-under and 12-under mixed doubles unit. Scores from the two divisions will be combined to determine the final standings.

Play begins at 10:30 a.m. with registration taking place at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“We invited 30 clubs,” Snyder said. “We’d like to have more participating, but this is it. Still, with the players involved, it should be really good tennis.”
