The Butler YMCA swim team will be busy this weekend.

The squad is sending 47 swimmers to the YMCA state meet Saturday at Penn State University, including four district champions.

“Our roster numbers have been stable over the past few years, but our district and state qualifying numbers have definitely been on the rise,” fourth-year Butler YMCA head coach Alex Fertelmes said.

Butler had 65 of its 120 swimmers qualify for the district meet — held recently at Chartiers Valley High School — this year.

Chadd Cummings, 14, won district titles in the 100-meter breaststroke and 200 individual medley. He is seeded first in the 100 breast at the state meet.

“Chadd placed second in that event at states last year,” Fertelmes said. “And that was as a 13-year-old, on the younger edge of that age bracket.”

Max Verhaut won a district title in the 11-12 200 IM.

The girls 13-14 200 freestyle relay team of Camryn Forbes, Kaelyn Emmanuel, Jillian McElhaney and Abbie Jones broke the team record in that event, swimming a 1:44.38, while winning the district championship.

“They broke that mark by more than half a second,” assistant coach Corrie Jones said.

Fertelmes credited the increased production of the YMCA swim team to “the dedication of our swimmers and parents and the quality instruction from our coaches Tim O’Toole, Corrie Jones, Kim Smith and parent volunteer coaches Dave Bocci and Frank Cicco.”

Jones said Fertelmes has brought “a calmness” to the program.

“He’s brought consistency and continuity to what we’re doing,” she said. “He never gets flustered about anything.”
