Megahan helps Saxonburg oust Meridian
Saxonburg’s Mac Megahan pitched a complete game on the mound and added two singles and an RBI at the plate to lift his team to a 10-7 win over Meridian in the Butler County American Legion baseball playoffs Sunday night at Highfield Park.
Marcus Cashell singled and doubled in the win, while Nate Sarnese had a pair of base hits.
The result eliminates Meridian (17-6) from the double-elimination tournament, while Saxonburg advances to the loser’s bracket final against Cranberry Township. That game will be played at 6 p.m. tonight at Laura Doerr Park.
The winner will face Center Township, which has yet to lose in the tourney.
• Saxonburg made it to Sunday thanks to an 8-6 win over Zelienople Saturday at Laura Doerr Park.
Megahan smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, accounting for the final runs.
He had already stroked an RBI triple in the second frame, as Saxonburg held early leads of 3-0 and 4-2.
Andy Fritz added a two-run single for the victors and Cashell had two base hits.
Zak Muto singled and homered for Zelienople.
• Also on Saturday, Meridian overcame a 7-0 deficit to eliminate Butler City by a score of 9-8 at Pullman Park.
Alex Scialabba tied the game at eight in the seventh inning with a run-scoring base hit, then won it in the next frame when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jace Lyon trotted home with the winning run.
