Nuke moratorium backed

Lois Larsen’s April 7 letter, “No more nuke plants,” was so sensible and well-delivered, I had to write in support of it.

In her letter, she called for a moratorium on nuclear power plants. That would end the construction of new plants, but also would allow existing plants to run to the end of their typical life expectancies.

All too often, people unrealistically call for the immediate closing of said plants, even while using nuclear-supplied electricity to type their complaints. That makes the suggestion seem more like a Chicken Little-style, knee-jerk reaction than a rational idea, stripping it of all credibility.

Larsen’s approach is not only reasonable but will, in the end, cause more people to support her idea, as no rational, thinking person would support the closing of multimillion-dollar nuclear facilities that are far from paying for themselves.

That being said, the fact of the matter is, even if the U.S completely abolished the use of nuclear power here, we have no sway in other countries, especially China and Japan, which could care less what we think about nuclear-supplied electricity.

People’s time would be better spent addressing matters that we can have an impact on, such as our ridiculous war on drugs, and the country being turned into a police state, against our wishes.
