Prospect grabs 2 football crowns
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Prospect Chiefs youth football program made its 85-mile trek to Punxsutawney worthwhile Saturday.
The Chiefs captured the junior (ages 9 and 10) and senior (ages 11 and 12) ABC League Super Bowl championships, claiming both titles in the same year for the first time in the program's history.
Prospect's junior team completed a 10-0 season with a 22-0 triumph over previously unbeaten Brookville (9-1). Christian Sequette scored on a 5-yard run and Luke Michalek did it on a 55-yard burst during the first half. Luke and John Michalek added two-point conversion runs.
Sequette's 45-yard run in the fourth quarter set up Luke Michalek's 33-yard TD run for the final points of the game.
Torin Basham recovered a fumble and Hunter Prementine intercepted a pass for the Chiefs' junior squad.
Prospect's senior team avenged a regular-season loss to Karns City — its only loss of the season — with a 16-14 triumph in double overtime.
Karns City (8-1) scored the first points of the game in the third quarter. Colin Dunmyer scored on a 4-yard run and Darren Stiehler added the conversion run.
Prospect got even in the fourth quarter on a 62-yard TD run by Josh McCloskey and a conversion run by Dalton Hilliard.
After neither team scored in the first overtime, Karns City (8-1) got on the board with Caleb Garing's 6-yard run. The PAT failed.
Ryan Lauster answered with a 3-yard touchdown run for Prospect (9-1). Lauster added the conversion run to win the championship.
