CT snares 6th BAMFL crown
BUTLER TWP — Call it a Center Township six-pack.
Lucas Dubyak rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and the Rams' defense short-circuited numerous Butler City drives en route to a 28-6 victory in the Butler Area Midget Football League championship game Saturday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.
The victory marked Center Township's sixth consecutive BAMFL championship.
The Wildcats (3-5) drove inside the CT 30-yard line six times, but managed only one touchdown. Butler City lost a fumble and turned the ball over on downs on four occasions.
"Our kids defended the goal line when they had to," Center Township coach Bob Vernick said. "Their goal was to get a shutout, but they fell short of that."
Center Township (8-0) defeated Butler City 24-14 and 22-18 during the regular season. CT has lost only three games in the past six years. The Rams have won more than 40 games during that stretch.
"Their kids are very dedicated to that program," Butler City coach Randy Bowser said. "We felt like we had a shot at them. We just couldn't punch it in."
CT built a 20-0 lead on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jamison Smith to Max Bachman, a 19-yard run by Dubyak and 9-yard burst by Tim Vernick. The latter score occurred with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter.
Damien Pickett — who had 15 carries for 134 yards — scored on a 6-yard run for Butler City late in the third quarter.
Dubyak scored on a 63-yard run with 1:25 left in the game.
"Butler City came at us hard on each and every play," Vernick said. "This was a hard-fought football game. Those kids have nothing to hang their heads about."
Center Township had a 286-273 edge in total yardage.
"We have some tremendous kids in our area," Vernick said of the Center Township program. "They respect this uniform and take football very seriously.
"This was probably the quietest team we've had, but they did the job on the field. Kids on this team want to uphold the tradition established by the kids before them."
Four players — Chad White of East Butler, Evan Knauer of Meridian, Anthony Riley of Butler City and Austin McMahon of Center Township — won the first BAMFL Sportsmanship Awards presented in honor of the late Dick Galante. They received their awards at halftime.
